Coastal Radar Imagery

Some of the RAF's all-important imagery of German coastal radar stations is reproduced here, together with the corresponding target maps. These photos were sized for target packs and therefore show the target as well as the surrounding area. Higher-magnification enlargements would also have been available, but they were rarely included in the target packs. I have provided some digital enlargements. The dangers involved in executing low-level reconnaissance missions anywhere between Dunkirk and Dieppe should be appreciated. Formidable anti-aircraft defences were deployed along substantial stretches of this coastline. Some of the photographs were taken offshore only a few feet above sea level; imagery captured from this angle could show radar equipment at the top of the cliff silhouetted against the sky.
