Two official reports on the vitally important but frequently overlooked task of air spotting in support of naval bombardment. The Air Spotting Pool at Lee-on-Solent airfield brought together some 159 aircraft on the morning of D-Day, and they flew 435 sorties, operating under the tactical control of 2nd Tactical Air Force. Lee-on-Solent launched more aircraft than any other Allied airfield that day. Without air spotting, naval bombardment of the German beach defences in Normandy would have been inaccurate and substantially ineffective.
